When you need the room

A 40ft container gives you about twice the floor of a 20ft in one lockable unit. It suits a business holding stock or equipment, a farm storing machinery parts, fencing and feed, a builder keeping materials on a larger site, or a household clearing out a big property. If you would otherwise need two 20ft containers, one 40ft means one set of doors to manage and one footprint to prepare.

Inside you get about 12.03m × 2.35m × 2.39m, roughly 28 square metres of floor and 67.7m³ of space. The door opening is the same as the smaller sizes, about 2.34m × 2.28m.

Living with a 12-metre box

Length is the thing to plan around. The far end is about 12 metres from the doors, so think about what goes where before loading: items you rarely need at the back, anything you reach for often near the doors, and a clear aisle all the way through. Lighting inside helps on a long unit; get electrical work done by a licensed electrician.

On paper the floor takes twenty Australian standard pallets, two across and ten deep, but two side by side leave very little of the internal width spare, and reaching the back row needs a plan for handling equipment. Treat that figure as a maximum on paper, not a loading plan.

Site and delivery come first

Empty, a 40ft weighs about 3,800 kg, and it is too long for many residential driveways and tight yards. It usually needs a side loader or a crane truck, which needs a long, clear, firm working area beside the placement position as well as a straight approach. Which side of the truck the container ends up on can decide whether the job works.

Check the approach and unloading area with the transport team before settling on a position. Send photos of the full route, the ground, overhead lines and branches, and the exact spot. If the site cannot take a 40ft, two 20ft containers may be the practical alternative. Plan the delivery.

Condition on a long container

A longer roof and floor means more to check. Ask about the actual unit’s roof, floor, door seals and any repairs, and ask for photos — we can send them on request before delivery. Watertight applies to cargo-worthy and new single-trip grades only; as-is units are sold as seen and are not sold watertight. For stock or equipment that must stay dry, choose one of the watertight grades and plan for condensation. Compare the grades.

Is a 40ft the right call?

Choose a 40ft when you need the volume and the site can take it. If access is tight, compare two 20ft units or a single 20ft. If you need extra height as well, ask about a high cube. Tell us what you are storing and where it is going and we will work through the options with you.
