Where a 10ft earns its place
A 10ft container is the answer when the space is the limit, not the budget. It suits a side yard, the back corner of a suburban block, a townhouse courtyard with vehicle access, or a spot beside a shed where a 20ft simply will not fit. Typical jobs are garden gear and a ride-on mower, trade tools that need to be locked up at home, sporting club equipment, or overflow from a garage that has become the storeroom.
Inside you get roughly 2.83m × 2.35m × 2.39m and about 15.9m³ of space. That works out to around 6.6 square metres of floor. It fills faster than people expect once shelving and a walkway go in, so lay the job out on the ground with tape before you decide.
How much actually fits
The door opening on a 10ft is the same as on a 20ft or 40ft: about 2.34m × 2.28m. So anything that fits through the doors of a bigger container will fit through these doors too; the question is only whether there is room once it is inside. On paper, the floor takes two rows of two Australian standard pallets (1165mm square), but two pallets side by side leave only a couple of centimetres of the internal width spare, so treat that as a ceiling rather than a plan.
For household or tool storage, shelving down one side and a clear strip down the other usually works better than filling the floor. Keep heavy items low and near the doors.
Not every 10ft is built the same
Ten-foot containers are much less common in the international shipping fleet than 20ft and 40ft units. Many are built for storage or shortened from a longer container, so the construction, door hardware and floor can differ from one unit to the next. Ask what the proposed unit is, how it was made and what grade it is, and ask for photos of the actual container — we can send them on request before delivery.

Getting a 10ft onto the block
Empty, a 10ft weighs about 1,300 kg, so it is lighter to handle and place than a longer container, but it still arrives on a truck. The vehicle needs a suitable approach, room to manoeuvre and clear air above the spot for unloading. A narrow side passage that you can walk down is not the same as one a container can be placed in.

Is a 10ft the right call?
If the space would take a 20ft, compare both before deciding. A 20ft has roughly twice the floor area and is a far more common size, so there is usually more choice of condition. A 10ft is the right call when the site genuinely cannot take anything longer, or when a smaller footprint matters more than the extra room. Compare the 20ft or ask about hiring for a short job.
