DAN’SSHIPPING CONTAINERS
Dan’s practical guides

A little thought about security.

A good lock helps. The condition of the doors and where the container sits matter too.

Start with the doors

Ask whether the doors close and latch properly, and check the locking points for damage. A strong padlock cannot compensate for a badly damaged door or locking assembly. Ask about repairs before choosing the unit.

Ask about a lock box

A lock box shields a compatible padlock from some forms of access. Check whether one is fitted, what lock it takes and whether it operates correctly with the doors closed. Designs vary, so do not buy a lock on appearance alone.

Look beyond the lock

Consider site access, lighting, visibility and who holds keys. Keep valuable contents out of view and maintain an inventory. No container or lock is theft-proof; check your insurance policy for storage and security conditions.

Keep it practical

Choose a locking arrangement you can use reliably, including in poor weather. Inspect and maintain it according to the manufacturer’s guidance. Never lock a person inside a container, and take care when opening doors if contents may have shifted.
